Maimouna Youssef by Tony Powell

GRADES 6–12

Maimouna Youssef will introduce students to writing exercises and performance techniques which galvanize them to use their creative voices to facilitate social change. In this interactive workshop/performance, she examines how hypnotic top 40 songwriting formulas can be utilized to effectively mobilize communities around issues of social justice, community building and politics. Students will learn how to take abstract ideas and concepts and make them tangible, personal and palatable for general consumption. Under Maimouna’s astute guidance students discover the power of inspiration, how to find it, harness it, and use it to move humanity forward continuing in the legacy of protest music. The principles learned in this class are taught from a musical perspective but can also be applied to fashion, visual art, public speaking, etc.
