Hello beautiful people!
What an awesome time we had last Saturday launching our new series Uptown Nights at Harlem Stage. Marc Cary continues to amaze me with his genius. Marc and his band, and all the phenomenal special guests made The Gatehouse explode. And a big “thank you” for helping me ring in my birthday at midnight. I had a great night and when it was all over, I drove out to the beach in the middle of the night, in the rain listening to CDs from some of the artists on the program.
What a way to kick in a new year than the launch of our news series UPTOWN NIGHTS AT HARLEM STAGE. AND WHAT A LAUNCH IT WAS! The showcase of new talent that opened the evening blew me away — from the sweet soulful start with Crystal Monee Hall, to Smash Mechanics spitting out edgy electronic rap. Len “Tuac” Xiang, who had Jimmy Hendrix and Jim Morrison channeling through him, mesmerized the crowd as he morphed from soul to rock to rap and back. Everyone was great!
The second half with Marc and the band with guest artists was sublime. I’ve known Marc for years and seen him cover a lot of ground, from accompanying the amazing jazz vocal icons Betty Carter and Abbey Lincoln to his blends of East Indian, West African and Native America musical traditions. AND NOW THIS! He is unstoppable and who would want to stop him anyway.
If you enjoyed the 2012: Hip Hop Experiment come back this season to Uptown Nights at Harlem Stage. I’ve planned an entire series where you’ll find some of the latest and greatest artists on the music scene. You’ll have a chance to mix and mingle around the bar, vibe off great talent and become part of Harlem’s cultural legacy. The more we see you, the more this music continues to live on. I hope to welcome you back to Harlem Stage!
